High/ Advanced – New Year’s resolutions

New Year’s Resolutions
  • Do you ever make new year’s resolutions? Why (not)?

  • If you were to make a list for this year, what would 3 of your resolutions be?

  • What information surprised you watching the video? Did that change the way you feel about new year’s resolutions?

The following tips may help you achieve your goals:

  • Set possible goals. Keep it simple and be realistic. Don’t set too high a goal or you can feel depressed or oppressed by it.

  • Set objective goals. It’s ok to say I want to be healthier”, but that’s too vague. Instead, say “I’ll change soda for water” or “ I want to lose (or gain) 5 pounds.”

  • Set checkpoints for your goals. Seeing if you results are being achieved or how much you have accomplished may make you feel more motivated (or be more attentive.

  • Take a step at a time. Suppose you want to be more athletic. Then you decide to avoid the elevator at work, or at home. And you climb all the 15 floors in one day just to realize you’ll never do it again. Instead, climb a floor one day, two floors two days after, and so on. That goes for almost everything we plan, from saving money to making friends. Keeping your credit card home and saying hi are good starts.

  • Change your environment. If you want to exercise, keep your gym clothes next to your bed when you wake up (or into a backpack for after work). If you need to lose weight or eat better, buy more healthy food. Even if you’re invited for a dinner with friends, well, go for it, but eat little. Changing your environment will help you get your goals more easily.

  • Know that you will eventually fail, but that is not the end of it. Don’t feel guilty, or ashamed or miserable because you haven’t been able to resist the temptation of that obscene hot-fudge double sundae. Enjoy the moment and keep focused not to fail again.
